CANADA'S WOMEN TEAM FINAL TEST BEFORE 2012 LONDON OLYMPIC GAMES: Canada and USA will meet this Saturday 30 June in a Women's International Friendly match in Sandy, UT






















Canada and USA will meet this Saturday 30 June in a Women's International Friendly match in Sandy, UT, USA, a North American send off for the two CONCACAF rivals heading to the London 2012 Women's Olympic Football Tournament in July. The Canada-USA match kicks off at noon local at the Rio Tinto Stadium, just south of Salt Lake City, UT. Both teams are putting the final touches on their Olympic preparations before heading across the Atlantic for next month's big games.
The Canada-USA match will be broadcast by NBC in the USA. Canadian fans can see this live broadcast in on Sportsnet ONE, with a scheduled start time of 13.30 ET / 10.30 PT. For the match, Canada will wear its centennial blue kits to commemorate the Canadian Soccer Association's 100th anniversary.
USA and Canada finished one-two at the 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Vancouver, BC. The two CONCACAF teams will compete in the London 2012 Olympics from 25 July to 9 August. USA is in a group with France, Colombia and Korea DPR while Canada is in a group with Japan, South Africa and Sweden. The other women's group features Great Britain, Brazil, Cameroon and New Zealand. USA is the defending Olympic champion from Beijing 2008 while Japan is the reigning FIFA Women's World Cup champion from Germany 2011.
Already in 2012, Canada has posted a record of nine wins and three losses in 12 international matches. Canada posted four wins and one loss at the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying tournament in January, with only a defeat to USA in the championship final. More than 20,000 fans were in attendance for Canada's last two matches at BC Place, a 3:1 win over Mexico in the semi-final (to qualify for the Olympics) and a 0:4 loss to USA in the final.
Canada's most recent international match was a 1:0 victory over China PR on 30 May 2012. Diana Matheson and goal-scorer Christine Sinclair combined for the added-time winning goal in the 93rd minute at Stade Moncton 2010 Stadium.
Canada's rivalry with USA extends back to July 1986 when the two nations played a pair of international matches at the North American Cup in Blaine, MN (as part of the Sons of Norway annual youth tournament). USA won the first match on 7 July and Canada won the second match on 9 July. Most recently in 2011 international matches played in USA, the two sides drew 1:1 in Kansas City on 17 September before USA won 4:0 in Portland, OR on 22 September.
From the goal out, Canada's current squad features Sabrina D'Angelo, Karina LeBlanc and Erin McLeod as goalkeepers, Emily Zurrer, Melanie Booth, Carmelina Moscato, Robyn Gayle, Rhian Wilkinson, Candace Chapman, Marie-Eve Nault and Lauren Sesselmann as defenders, and Kaylyn Kyle, Diana Matheson, Desiree Scott, Christine Sinclair, Sophie Schmidt, Melissa Tancredi, Kelly Parker, Jonelle Filigno, Brittany Timko and Chelsea Stewart from the midfield up through to the attack.
The 30 June match marks Canada's last international match before the team departs for Europe next week, with a two-week camp scheduled in Switzerland from 5-18 July. In the London 2012 group phase, Canada will face Japan on 25 July, South Africa on 28 July, and Sweden on 31 July.
